Skin care routine during pregnancy.

The skin is the largest organ that exists in the human body. During pregnancy, between hormones, extra pounds, and the stretching on specific areas like the belly, hips, and boobs, it is crucial to take care of your skin and maintain a good routine that minimizes stretch marks or other marks of pregnancy.

There is a wide range of skin changes due to pregnancy, and this is precisely due to changes in estrogen and progesterone levels that influence skin in all pregnant women. Many of the skin problems during pregnancy include Stretch marks, skin darkening, acne, varicose veins, skin tags and moles, Itchy and sensitive skin, among others.

In this post, I will give you a guide to take care of your skin during pregnancy that will allow you to have the best skin ever.

1. Minimize sun damage.

During pregnancy, the pigment-producing cells of a woman’s body are hypersensitive. Therefore, the woman’s skin during pregnancy is susceptible to damage from ultraviolet rays. Below, I am going to give you a list of the tips that you can implement to avoid unnecessary exposure and sunburn.

  • Avoid sitting directly in the sun, always look for an area in the shade.
  • Wear wide hats that give your skin protection. Avoid the hottest hours, which go from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
  • Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, check the manufacturer’s instructions, and reapply it every 30 minutes if necessary.
  • If you use make-up, always use the ones that have an SPF-15 at least.
  • Avoid skin care products that contain fragrance or alcohol, especially if you are going to be under the sun for a long time.
  • During pregnancy, avoid tanning salons, or artificial tanning lights.

After giving birth to your baby, your skin will remain just as sensitive for a few months. Maintaining protection is extremely important in the postpartum period as well.

2. Food is medicine.

A healthy and balanced nutrition, with the correct nutrients, are going to be your best ally during pregnancy, because poor diet and poor complexion go hand in hand.

You’ll need to Increase foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin B 6 in your diet.

Examples of these foods are:

Vitamin C: All citric.

Vitamin B 6: Milk, breakfast cereal, avocados, chickpeas, green peas, bananas, carrots, spinach, sweet potato, beef, egg, chicken, liver, salmon, tuna, ricotta cheese and turkey meet.

During pregnancy, the recommended amount of vitamin B 6 should be at least 25 to 50 milligrams. You can also get recommended vitamins from your prenatal pills. Always check with your doctor first.

3. Hydration is key.

To counteract the effects of hormones during pregnancy, a fundamental part of your skin routine must be hydration.

These tips will help.

  • Drink lots of water.
  • Use air humidifier on all the closed spaces.
  • Treat your skin with fresh air breaks regularly.
  • Use good quality hydrating lotions.

4. Use the right fabrics.

When you have some extra pounds on your body, wearing the right clothes, with the best fabrics will alleviate rashes and other skin conditions.

To avoid this, these tips will help you:

  • Wear loose cotton clothing that allows your skin to breathe.
  • Stay away from synthetic fabrics such as polyester.
  • Avoid the use of pantyhose to prevent heat type rashes on your inner thighs and pubic areas.
  • Applying unscented powder or any other emollient to your sensitive areas to minimize irritation.

5. Be kind to your sensitive skin, and be mindful of the products you use.

Having the right products on hand will allow you to minimize spots, acne, changes in skin pigmentation, among others.

Here is a list for the products and things you should avoid or do during pregnancy to maintain a beautiful skin:

  • Stay away from oily, pore plugging facial cream products, harsh abrasives, and skin peelers.
  • Avoid using cleansers that can dry out the skin, or that contain alcohol.
  • Before you start using any beauty product, do a test to see if there are no reactions. To perform a patch test, you must apply the product to the inside of your forearm and wait 30 minutes to see if there is irritation.
  • Do not use several new products at the same time so in case there is a reaction, you’ll know what was the product that caused it.
  • If your skin dries out or starts flaking, apply moisturizers and emollients frequently and abundantly.

6. Bath wisely.

Water is considered safe for the skin. However, using too much soap during bath time can be counterproductive if you want to minimize skin irritation during pregnancy.

These tips will help you:

  • Try to use moisturizing soaps on your skin.
  • After the bath, seal in the moisture by applying moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
  • If the leg shaving products irritate your skin, use only moisturizing lotion or gel instead.

7. Relieving itchiness.

Itchiness is one of those symptoms that appear during pregnancy that can drives you crazy, especially if you have or have previously suffered from skin conditions such as eczema.

In this case, I am going to give you some tips that will help you a lot to relieve itching.

  • Add a cup of cornstarch and a half cup of baking soda to a half-filled tub of water, and in this water, immerse your most itchy parts.
  • And to prepare compresses that you can put directly above your skin on particularly itchy areas, take a tablespoon of cornstarch and a tablespoon of baking soda in a quart of warm water, and there you have, natural compresses with a powerful anti-itchy benefits.

8. Upgrade your makeup products.

Whether it is to feel alive, beautiful or simply to cover the countless nights when you haven’t been able to sleep, you need makeup in your life.

But, what rules you must follow, so this ally does not end up being your worst enemy during pregnancy? Hang on, I have some tips for you!

  • Use skin-friendly makeups, preferably water-based ones.
  • Use makeups that contain emollients.
  • Avoid makeup that can clog your pores or dehydrate your skin.
  • And the crucial step, remove your makeup every night, and allow your skin to breathe again, use makeup removal wipes that are gentle to your skin, or wash your face with cleansers that contain some sort of moisturizer.

As you can see, avoiding skin symptoms during pregnancy is almost impossible, due to increased hormones, skin stretching, among others. But there are many things you can do to stay beautiful and healthy during this time.
