At 27 weeks pregnant, the baby is as big as a Cabbage. The average 27 week fetus weighs about 2.0 lbs. or 900 grams, and measures about 24 centimeters long.
Small discrepancies on weight and size not necessarily means that there is a problem, only if the difference is 2 weeks or more further testing is required.
Your list of Pregnancy symptoms at 27 weeks includes!
Itchy belly skin: Skin irritation is a common problem for many mommies, that tends to appear during the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, when you’re really starting to show, and only seems to get more pronounced as time passes and your belly continues to grow.
Backaches: Gentle stretching can help your back, also consider sleeping with one of those huge body pillows, which can ease some of the pressure on your hips and help you get into a comfy position for your back.
Constipation: Another normal symptom at 27 week is constipation, this you can be improved with some exercise, drinking lots of water, and eating plenty of fiber-rich foods can help you stay regular.

Fetal development at 27 weeks!
- Your baby may recognize both your and your partner’s voices by now, hearing is progressing as the network of nerves to the ears matures though the sounds he hears are muffled thanks to the creamy coating of vernix covering them. So this might be a good time to read and even sing to your baby.
- Your baby’s bones relatively soft and flexible until now, are storing calcium and growing harder every day.
- Increase fetal movements with intermittent patters are happening regularly now, since the nerves are better developed compared to the previous months, the movements are more coordinated.
- Lungs are rapidly developing at this time, an while your baby’s lung won’t function until birth preparation for breathing begin now. Cells inside the lungs begin to make surfactant , a fatty substance that helps the newborn to breath.
- Your baby’s diaphragm and chest muscles are practicing expanding and contracting.
- Your baby is having hiccups by now as well, baby is also practicing swallowing amniotic fluid, and Peeing every 50 to 60 minutes.

What to know about doctor visits?
Your doctor will measure fundal height at each prenatal visit at this point. Fundal height is the distance from the pubic bone to the top of your uterus. In centimeters, the fundal height should match your week of pregnancy, give or take two centimeters.
It should continue to increase about a centimeter each week. A higher or lower fundal height could be the sign of a pregnancy condition such as gestational diabetes, a growth issue, or a breech baby, so if it doesn’t appear to be average, further testing may be necessary.
If there is any questionable size discrepancy then Ultrasound is the way to go to check fetal growth.
Starting at week 28, your visits will be every two weeks.
By now you probably have the majorities of tests done, at this point doctor visits consist in monitoring:
- Your weight gain.
- Blood pressure.
- Glucose.
- Ketones.
- Protein.
- Nitrate.
- Fundal height.
- Fetal presentation.
- Heart rate with Doppler.
- Fetal movements.
- Signs of preterm labor.
- Edema or fluid retention in your body.
If any sign of preterm labor is present such as Contractions, Pelvic pressure, Backache, Cramping or bleeding, then an Ultrasound will be ordered.
Remember Fetal weight is not an issue at this point, Measurements on the baby will begin at week 32, Ultrasound at this point consist on:
- Fetal position.
- Placenta location.
- Amount of Amniotic fluid.
- Heart beat (normal 120 to 170 bpm).
Measurement only if intrauterine growth restriction is suspected.
If Measurements are necessary they are as follow.
- Biparietal Diameter( BPD )
- Head circumference( HC )
- Abdominal circumference( AC )
- Femur length( FL )
