Causes of abnormal bleeding during pregnancy.

Sharing is caring.

The causes of Abnormal bleeding during pregnancy can be varied. The appearance of abnormal bleeding early in pregnancy says a lot about the severity of the problem. For example: If the bleeding is dark and small, more like a spotting, it is usually normal. But if the bleeding is intense red, and abundant, you should immediately call your doctor.

Not worrisome causes of abnormal bleeding during pregnancy.

1. Implantation bleeding.

This bleeding can occur between week two and week four of gestation, it occurs when the embryo finally reaches the uterine cavity, which is already prepared for pregnancy. When the embryo attaches itself to the cavity, a normal rupture of some microscopic blood vessels occurs within the cavity and therefore a small bleeding occurs, considered totally normal.

2. Subchorionic bleeding.

Subchorionic bleeding is one of the most common causes of abnormal bleeding during the first trimester of pregnancy. It occurs when there is an accumulation of blood in the contours of the gestational sac. This blood is reabsorbed by your body most of the time, but at other times it is expelled in the form of a small bleed.

3. Menstrual bleeding.

Just with the beginning of pregnancy, the hormonal level begins to rise, these hormones are precisely those that prevent menstrual periods during pregnancy, However, in some cases if the hormones are not high enough, in some women, a bleeding much like a menstrual period in the first month may occur.

4. Bleeding after sexual intercourse.

After intercourse bleeding occurs because the vagina and cervix are highly vascularized areas of the body. During sexual intercourse, a microscopic rupture of some capillaries in the area of the cervix can occur and some spotting may follow. This bleeding is not harmful for your baby in any way. That is why, sexual intercourse is not contraindicated during pregnancy. Another reason that can cause a small bleeding is the presence of small polyp or polyps within the cervix. Once again nothing to worry about.

5. Ovarian cyst.

When ovulation of the ovary occurs, an egg is released to the Fallopian tubes, if this egg is fertilized, a pregnancy develops. That ovary that release the egg, if fertilization occurs, creates an ovarian cyst that will produce hormones to support the embryo that will implant in the uterine cavity eventually. This ovarian cyst also resolves on its own in about 4 to 6 weeks after pregnancy begins, but in some cases it can cause minor bleeding as well.

6. Placental bleeding.

The placenta begins to form from week 11 of pregnancy, and is fully formed at week 13. The placenta is a highly vascularized organ. Therefore during the process of formation of the placenta, especially if it is developing in the lower part of the uterus, it can cause a small bleeding.

What to do if you experience abnormal bleeding during pregnancy.

First of all stay calm so that you can think objectively. If the bleeding is pink, dark or brown, you have no pain, it is not persistent, and it only stains a thin pad occasionally throughout the day, then it can wait until your next medical appointment. If the bleeding occurs after physical exercises or sexual intercourse, you should stop these activities until consulting your doctor.

Now, if the bleeding is enough to fill a sanitary pad, is intense, red, it is accompanied by pelvic pain or cramping, fatigue, dizziness or faintness, or is accompanied with the expulsion of tissues or blood clots. Then you need to seek medical attention immediately, either in an emergency center, or at your doctor’s office, if possible the same day, or the next day.

When talking to the staff or the doctor, explain the type of bleeding. A few tests and probably an ultrasound will be enough to rule out what is happening.
